YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE I CAN TRUST
by Michael E. Petrie

This exciting legal/murder/mystery -- written by an attorney & inspired by real life cases -- has already garnered GREAT REVIEWS! Below are just a few:

ABC News - Emmy Award winning producer Greg Dobbs of Good Morning America, Nightline, and 20/20 says, "Michael E. Petrie writes with authenticity that other authors fail to capture. He knows the people, he knows the scene, he knows the life he writes about!"

CBS News - Emmy Award winning journalist David Henderson says, "In praise of Michael E. Petrie ... Long ago I learned to recognize exceptional writing talent. Michael Petrie is squarely in that category. He has that creative writing gift of seeing the world about him through a special lens of perspective that bring his words alive. He has the storytelling ability to place the reader into the moment, making us feel as though we are there. His writing is entertaining, articulate, fast-paced, & just plain fun to read!"

Buzz Book Review - "This author's style is fast-paced, witty, funny, light & easy. YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE I CAN TRUST by Michael E. Petrie is a real page-turner, I read it cover-to-cover in a single weekend. As advertised, it kept me entertained and guessing right to the final page. I'm told the story is based upon actual events and legal cases of the author/attorney. If that's true, I can hardly wait to read his next book: I'm already a fan!"

Book Review

South Bay Review - "You're The Only One I Can Trust is an ideal summertime who-dun-it, taking readers straight to the beach, aboard sailing yachts and to tropical islands, searching for clues, with just a touch of kink and unrequited love thrown in. This sardonic, jovial homage to the legal/mystery genre should be on everyone's summer reading list."

Kimberley Cameron, well-known literary agent and book critic with offices in Paris & San Francisco says, "You're the Only One I Can Trust is a very accomplished work by a fine writer."

Author Lon Schleining says, "Michael E. Petrie has the rare combination of writing talent, dogged research, and enviable gift for story telling ... but his real contribution to readers is writing based on following the facts wherever they lead. Lucky for us we get to ride along."

Sandy Cloud says, Preparing your summer reading list? Put this one at the top. I loved it! 5 stars out of 5 stars.”

Laguna Beach Books says, "Amazing!"

Ardath Weaver, Director North Carolina Arts Council and editorial board member of several national publications says, "So impressive! I give this book Five Stars!"

And readers from all over America, Canada and as far away as Barcelona, Spain agree!

Here's what readers just like you are saying about YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE I CAN TRUST

Cheryl Grosrenaud Mills, Dixon, Illinois - Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home - says, "YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE I CAN TRUST is the first mystery book written by Michael E. Petrie and I have to tell you all that this is A VERY GOOD READ! I hope you buy the book and enjoy reading it."

Thomas Emero - attorney - Bangor, Maine gives it a perfect 5 stars and says, “You're the Only One I Can Trust is lots of fun and it has it all. Suspense, sex, mystery, lust and greed disguised under a warm blanket of Southern California sunshine. In addition, the story is not without meaning and there are subtle philosophical undertones which should also strike a cord with most readers.  I have read many of the mystery and suspense books of the day written by the big named authors. They have a mass produced feel and since the author manages to produce at least one book a year we all know there is an army of support behind it. Well, this book has much more of a home grown feel, making it taste a lot better. The author does not try to impress you with in-depth understanding of some branch of the military or little known weapons system. Instead he uses very real life characters in a realistic story line to weave a intriguing tale well worth the time and the few bucks. You will enjoy it.”

Michael Goodwin - actor - Los Angeles, California says, "Terrific! Even if you're not an avid reader or have not read a book in awhile, this is the one to read."

JP Ruyle, Temecula, California, says, "... A really good read ... fun and imaginative, and just the right amount of raunchy. You can feel the author's love of the ocean. I like the chronology of how he pieced it all together, creative!"

Tricia Farris, San Diego, California, says, "I am an avid reader, reading about a book a week. I read You're the Only One I can Trust in two days. I couldn't put it down. I really enjoyed it! The story line and locations in the book were fascinating. The twists and turns had me guessing until the end. And I fell in love with the characters. I could totally see a series revolving around Ben, the central character, with him getting involved in future interesting cases."

Dana Too, Dana Point, California, says, "REALLY GOOD! And I don't give out such praise easily or often. I consider myself a pretty avid reader, but with You're the Only One I can Trust I genuinely could not put it down. The story line kept things moving at a very fast pace, with plot twists that kept me guessing right to the end. Every book description promises you that, but this one delivered. The story and locations in the book were fun and the characters really interesting. I hope there's a sequel because these characters are too good to never hear from again and I love the way this author writes. I absolutely recommend this book ... a great read!"

Jennifer Samuel Shakir, Aurora, Illinois, says, "Read about 60 pages yesterday evening and a few more this morning. Great!!! Really enjoying it. The book is terrific!"

Marc Griffin, Austin, Texas, says, "Liked it. Entertaining. In fact, most entertaining book I've read in a long while. Quick paced short chapters with interesting characters and, tho written by a lawyer, only minimal legalese. Reminiscent of a A West Coast Elmore Leonard."

Jesse T. - attorney - San Diego, California, says, "I really enjoyed this book and congratulations to the author on a really great first novel! I am involved in a monthly book club and will certainly pass this book along to my fellow readers for them to enjoy as well!"

Robert Pessell, West Hills, CA says, “Read this book while on the beach in Cabo and really enjoyed it. I especially liked the way the story closed in a rather non-traditional way. I hope this is the first of a trilogy.”

Bilenda Harris-Ritter - attorney - Little Rock, Arkansas, says, "...great story line. My Junior League Book Club wants this author to come discuss the book, please put us on your itinerary."

Dr. David Edwards - pathologist - Olympia, Washington, says, "Entertaining!"

Karen G. Barton, Edisto Beach, South Carolina, says, “I read You're The Only One I Can Trust ...twice! Great read. Got another one in the works?”

Nonie Conroy Babula, Warrenville, Illinois, says, “Quirky twists .... The characters kept intriguing until the end. I love to read and this author’s ability to turn a phrase is a gift to readers.”

Phil Burnside - photojournalist - Sussex, Wisconsin, says,  “5 Stars ... outstanding plotting, structure and quality of writing....”

Lorraine Rian, San Diego, California, says, "I really liked this book. A really good story with an ending I did not see coming."

Jim Swanson, El Cajon, California, says, “I am very pleased that I purchased this book. I enjoyed it thoroughly and was able to visualize the settings throughout the book. The characters were very believable and the ending was unexpected. I usually enjoy reading Grisham, Clancy, Flynn, Ludlum, etc, but I am glad I tried this author and will look forward to his next book.”

Yanik Gozlan, Murrieta, California, says, "I really liked this book a lot. A fun read. Short, quick chapters, interesting characters, a lovesick hero, exotic locales, morality struggles, and a surprise ending that I truly did not anticipate."

Connie Thompson Julien, Houghton, Michigan, says, “Best book I’ve read all year!”

Nancy A. Colella, San Diego, California says, “My Mom read this book first and she told me how much she enjoyed it.  I finished it in 1 week, which for me is quick. I typically do not have much time to read, but I could not put it down.  It was so good and the finish was very surprising.”

Dr. Lara Valdes, Austin, Texas, says, "From beginning to end it was a fun ride, with characters that are...interesting to say the least. Just when you think you have the mystery figured out, the story changes, and characters start divulging the myriad skeletons hiding in Oh so many closets. The author (who happens to also be a lawyer) is a wonderful wordsmith...writing with fluent expression. I highly recommend this quick and smart read. But be warned...by the last 1/3 of the book, I was sacrificing precious sleep on this page turner...could not put it down!!!"

Daine Nape, Ormond Beach, Florida says, "Thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to this author's next one."

Myra Penn, San Diego, California, says, "5.0 out of 5 stars. Loved this book! I'm not a particularly big fan of murder mysteries, but a friend told me how much she liked this book, so I decided to give it a try. And I'm so very glad I did. Much more than just a murder mystery, it's a love story, a story about a group of people reaching a certain age and point in their lives ...This is the best book I've read all year .... and I read around a book a month. I highly and unabashedly recommend this book and this author. The writing style is quick, witty, humorous and riveting. I read the entire book in a single weekend .... then read it again a few weeks later because it was so much fun. With the second reading, I spotted little nuances that had escaped me the first time. Loved the really fascinating characters in this story and the interesting places where the story took me. I especially loved the women in this story and was so impressed that a male author could conjure up such interesting, dynamic, and real female characters. The plot twists kept me guessing right to the end. Just when I thought I'd figured it all out, there would be an unexpected twist that I just did not see coming. Also, the story ends in a rather unconventional way that I really liked a lot. A great read. Actually, this story would make a really great movie!! Until then, I anxiously await this author's next book."

Gail Powell says "Plot twists abound!!  Plot twists, interesting characters and settings make this a very enjoyable mystery!! Look forward to reading other books written by this author!!"

Lenore Burkhardt Becker, St. Louis. MO, says "It caught my attention right away with the plot and the characters are very engaging. I like Petrie's writing style."

Anonymous Amazon Customer says, "5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was intrigued with the unique characters and interesting plot. And the author's descriptive writing talent brought the beautiful scenery of Southern California come alive. I look forward to Michael E. Petrie's future books. He is definitely a new author worth following."

Mike Gavin, Barcelona, Spain gives it “4 stars out of a perfect 5.”

Wendy Reichental Shade, Montreal, Canada, says, "I would definitely recommend this book, a quick and fun read! I don’t normally choose mystery murders but was sold on the prospect that the story takes place in sunny California and Hawaii. I found it to be an enjoyable read, filled with many plot twists and turns that kept me guessing right up to the end. And because the author of the book is a lawyer, I appreciated the legal authenticity that filled the pages, well written and executed.

Also, as a woman of a certain age, I want to give kudos to the author for writing about a male character who, at middle age, does not go chasing a much younger woman but finds delight and attraction with a similarly aged woman. This to me is a much appreciated twist."

TITLE:  Warm Regards
Written and Performed by Michael E. Petrie

Lyrics:
She wrote, “I just can’t wait for summer. Winter’s almost through.
Springtime brings the sunshine anew,
but the waiting’s such a bummer. Waiting. Waiting to be again with you.
You know it sure gets lonely alone here with everyone around.
And I just can’t seem to find or write romantic lines.
So, I’ll say what I think, but I don’t know how it will sound.
I look at your picture and pretend you’re here with me,
but I know you’re not and it makes me more lonely.
So, I’m writing this letter all alone under the stars.”
And then she signed it, “Love and Warm Regards.”

Lord above, she signed it Love and Warm Regards.
Lord above, she signed it Love and Warm Regards.

But everything’s in motion, life keeps moving on
and soon the things we love the most are gone.
So with the passing of the summer I’m sitting here alone
under the stars with your last letter and warm regards.
She said, “I look at your picture and pretend you’re here with me,
but I know you’re not and it makes me more lonely.”
So, now I lovingly hold this letter all alone under the stars.
The one you signed with Love and Warm Regards.

Lord above, she signed it love and Warm Regards.
Lord above, she signed it love and Warm Regards.

TITLE:   Nothin' New
Written and Performed by Michael E. Petrie

Lyrics:
There are some ladies
in my time I’ve known a few
So heartbreak to me is nothin’ new.

Goodbye is a word
it seems I’ve often heard.
There’s nothin’ worse than the slamiing of the door.

And when your love is gone
you feel like you’re all alone
in a world that was meant for two.

But I am confident
even with the way things went,
that I will live to love again.

My heart has learned to mend
over and over again.
With each new love I pray this is where my mending will end.

So go ahead & go where you’re goin’ to.

You’re someone that I’ll think of
but I was lookin’ for love when I found you.

So go ahead & go where you’re goin’ to.
You’re someone that I’ll think of
but I was lookin’ for love when I found you.

I was lookin’ for love when I found you.

April 18, 1976: While many of my friends seem to be settling down into the whole career and marriage thing, I'm making plans to set sail. Could our worlds be any farther apart? When I talk about the voyages of Robin Lee Graham and Joshua Slocum (legendary sailing heroes) many of my buddies shake their heads, saying, "Mike, those are just people in books - they're not real!" When I speak about wanting to cross an ocean in a small boat, to sail off over the distant horizon, I usually get, "That's a nice dream, but nobody really does that sort of thing."

Their wives and girlfriends probably consider me a bad influence for entertaining such notions. From them I usually get, "You're crazy! Why would you even want to do something like that?"

My own family thinks I'm insane wanting to be out on a cold, wet ocean atop a tiny piece of floating fiberglass. My father insists that any dream I have of sailing to far-off places is merely a fantasy that will never be realized, that I'd best forget about such nonsense and grow up!

Maybe I'm deluded, but I'd like to do so much more than simply settle down into a job, a wife and kids. That's my father's reality, not mine! Seems like there will be plenty of time for all that after I've fulfilled my own personal dreams.

• May 8, 1976: Four motley young sailors cruising the high seas! My shipmates are Dave Edwards, Karl Metzenberg and Allen Wu. (Add my Italian blood to the mix and how's that for an ethnically diverse crew?) Dave and Karl are both fellow sailors. Allen is not a sailor, but would like to be. We got underway in the early morn without much fanfare. As we cleared the breakwater, there was a girl sitting on the rocks who waved enthusiastically. Other than that, no big send off.

Sailing northward toward Point Conception, here is what the current 1976 Sea Boating Almanac says about where we were headed:

A true-life coming of age adventure story written by Michael Petrie

You may find that At The Speed of Life reads like a novel, but it is actually a true story in journal form that takes the reader on a series of adventures, from the everyday suburban life of a love-smitten teenager to sailing the South Pacific to bronco-busting in the American West. The story is Walter Mitty, Forrest Gump, The Wonder Years and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis all rolled into one except that, unlike those fictional tales, this story is all true!

It began in 1965 as a ninth grade English Class writing assignment - keep a journal for one semester. New teen Mike Petrie began recording his thoughts about the sweet trauma of adolescence. But long after the due date for handing in the assignment, he continued committing his observations to paper - writing about loves discovered and lost, emotions stirred, famous folk whose paths crossed his, and the many social and political upheavals that occurred over four fascinating decades as he and his fellow Baby Boomers pursued, and even redefined, the American Dream.

The resulting work is replete with an abundance of photographs and icons from the various eras. There are more than 77 million Baby Boomers in America and in a very real sense this is THEIR story! But it should have wide appeal to anyone who enjoys reading true adventures or coming-of-age stories. In fact, the reason Michael Petrie decided to shape the journal into a book was due to encouragement from a Feature Development Executive for DreamWorks - a fellow Baby Boomer - who sees potential in it for a film adaption.

This is Michael Petrie's first non-fiction book. He has written one novel, was selected most promising new author by South Bay Writers Guild, won an Erle Stanley Gardner Mystery Writing award, Texas Bar Journal fiction writing contest, 2008 National Legal Fiction Writing Competition award, and been published in several newspapers and magazines, including: SAIL - World's Leading Sailing Magazine, San Diego North County Times, The Californian, Western Horseman, Pacific Skipper, New York Bar Journal, Western Legal Journal, Southwestern Law Digest, Downers Grove Reporter, Coto de Caza News, Web Law Review, and is a frequent contributor to the online publication Boomer Cafe which boasts a readership of over 400,000 weekly. The amount of e-mail Mr.Petrie gets from readers indicates his writing is enjoyed by a substantial portion of that audience.

• April 1, 1968: A few days ago a bunch of us went into the city to visit some of the museums and take in that new movie The Graduate. The movie's title seemed appropriate, us guys all about to become graduates . . .  from high school. What a terrific movie! The soundtrack music was all Simon & Garfunkel songs. This is the first movie I've ever seen that used "real music" that our generation actually listens to, as opposed to some musical score composed by grown-ups just for the movie.

At the theater, we encountered a group of girls wearing beads and Indian headbands - "flower-sniffing, cloud-hopping hippie chicks" my dad would call them. They were college girls. Among them was a gorgeous blond named Joni - pronounced Johnnie she informed me. She looked incredibly sexy - quite a lot like my ultimate dream girl, singer Marianne Faithfull, with her angelic face framed by long, straight blond hair. Luckily for me, the attraction was mutual - we grokked each other instantly.

The rest of the evening Joni and I were quite the carefree flower children - skipping and frolicking merrily through the streets of the city, wearing daisies purchased from a street vendor in our hair. Joni began singing Simon & Garfunkel songs from the movie we had just seen and soon we were crooning duets and dancing along the sidewalk like some hippie version of an old Gene Kelly movie. "Feelin' groooovy," she sang while I harmonized.

Just watching her move was like poetry in motion and when we finally kissed - she kissed me actually, taking me completely by surprise with her assertiveness - it was like an incredible hit of oxygen that left me gasping for more.
